Mono ethanolamine (MEA)

Monoethanolamine (MEA):

It is an organic compound with the chemical formula C₂H₇NO. It is a colorless, viscous liquid that has an ammonia-like odor. MEA is an important amino alcohol used in various industrial applications, especially in the production of detergents, personal care products, and gas treatment.

Common Applications:

  • MEA is widely used in gas purification processes, particularly in ammonia scrubbers and CO₂ removal systems. In these applications, it acts as an absorbent to capture and remove carbon dioxide (CO₂) and hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) from industrial gases, natural gas, and biogas.
  • MEA is used as a surfactant in the production of detergents, shampoos, cleaning agents, and emulsifiers. Its ability to reduce surface tension makes it effective in these formulations, helping to break down oils, grease, and dirt.
  • It is used in various cosmetic and personal care products such as shaving creams, toothpaste, and skin lotions as an emulsifying agent, helping to mix oil and water-based ingredients.
  • Amines like MEA are used as intermediates in the production of herbicides, pesticides, and pharmaceuticals. It is also used in the manufacture of alkylamines, fatty acid amides, and polyurethane foam
  • MEA is used as a wetting agent and in the finishing of textiles. It helps in the treatment of fabrics, especially during the dyeing and scouring processes.
